Oh Jasper!

As Queensland was urgent to prepare for Jasper the hurricane, it was doubtful if the event would continue. But the hurricane edged North and we gave a sigh of relief. The beach, however, did not disappoint in creating white-capped waves, strong currents and swells that surfers dream about.

On the day, we had over 200 competitors, and starting with a high tide, the Carnival was scheduled to begin with water sports. The conditions, however, made it impossible to guarantee Nippers’ safety. It was clear that board events were too dangerous and, therefore, were cancelled.

However, as soon as the tide receded, we launched into the beach sports: sprints, relays, and flags. Wades and swim-out events were also opened up, but the current was too strong for Iron Man and deeper water swims.
